As a veterinary surgeon, Charlotte had always understood the special bond between people and their pets. In 2020, she and her husband Nathan became volunteers with The Cinnamon Trust and were introduced to Keith and his beloved dog, Betsy. What began as regular dog walks soon became a special friendship. Alongside making sure Betsy got the exercise she needed, Charlotte and Nathan spent time with Keith too, sharing outings, stories and companionship.

Over the years, Betsy became a much-loved part of Charlotte and Nathan’s lives, joining them on countryside walks, coastal trips and adventures in the Yorkshire Dales. When Keith sadly passed away in 2024, Charlotte and Nathan, with support from The Cinnamon Trust, welcomed Betsy into their home permanently.

Betsy brought so much happiness to their family and formed a close bond with their own dog, Harris. After losing Betsy in 2025, Charlotte wanted to raise money for the charity that had meant so much to them all. She decided to honour Keith and Betsy by completing a month-long cold-water challenge, often starting her days before sunrise in near-freezing temperatures.

Her final swim, at midnight in Lake Windermere on New Year’s Eve, was an emotional tribute. Surrounded by family, with fireworks lighting the sky above her, it was a moment to reflect on the love, friendship and support that had meant so much over the years.

Charlotte’s story is a lovely reminder of the difference kindness and companionship can make, not only to pets and their owners, but to the volunteers who become part of their lives too.
